The starting basis when thinking about how to get a better search ranking for your website is to start off by looking at tools to find and select keywords that are relevant to your business. There are a number of great tools out there to help you out but most of them are not free. They are very useful but are all based on Google’s keywords.

As most of the online tools out there are based on Google’s keywords, we would highly recommend to use Google Adwords Keyword Planner, a free tool and one that is the most widely used. All you need to have is a Google Account.

So what does Google Adwords keyword planner do? It helps you find the best keywords for your activity.

So if you are a yoga teacher, type in Yoga, and Google will give you suggestions of “Ad groups” where you can sort out keywords according to categories and subjects. This will allow you to define the categories that have a high potential of traffic and where you can position yourself.

It’s also a great way to see what content you can create depending on certain categories that have high volume for searches. Taking the example of being a yoga teacher, if you see that people are searching on yoga retreats, it would be wise to create content that supports this on your website or your blog. That way (in very general terms), when people search for yoga retreats, you will gain more traffic because your website or your blog has the information that they are looking for.

Google Trends

Google Trends is another cool tool to use which allows you to see when people search for a particular subject that your activity fits in.

For example, if you sell ice cream, it’d be good to know that people search for ice cream in the summer periods so that you can adapt to this trend and offer discounts or create events for your product.

If you want to go further and check out what your competitors are doing, Semrush is a great tool to use.

You will be able to see what keywords other competitors are using, what keywords they have “paid” for (this allows you to be more visible) and in what areas you can compete in or invest in.

For instance, if you see that a competitor in fitness has bought keywords related to personal training, you can think about investing in gym coach or sports coach.

Semrush also allows you to track the position of your keywords on Google, how you fare compared to others in regard to the words that you use or the keywords that you buy.


Similar to Semrush, but different in style, MyPoseo is also another tool that can be used to check out your ranking.

All you need to do is insert a list of keywords that are relevant to your business to check the positioning in the tool.

After choosing your keywords thanks to these tools, you will need to write attractive content using these keywords effectively.
